RUWANWELI MAHA SEYA

Ruwanweliseya the most famous as well holy precious masterpiece of all Sri Lankan Buddhists. Ruwnweliseya stands on the holy land of Anuradapura within the well known Mahamewna uyana alias MahaMegha uyana which was devoted on bealf of the Bikkus in Anuradhapura era by king Devanampiyatissa. It was a peaceful landscape with calm and tranquil surrounding.

According to  Mahavansa the well established written source on Sri Lankan history says that, by the time of demarcating boundries of Mahamewuna Uyana Arhath Mahinda thero had preached that a king named Dutugemunu would build  a holy Dagaba called Ruwanweliseya one day. That particular rock inscription was found by king Dutugemunu later on.

Ruwanweli Maha seaya is also known as Swarnamali maha chaithya. There is an interesting folk story among age old rajarata people on the name "Swarnamali". According to it, there was a Diety call Swarnamali who lived in Ranthelambu tree which was standing in the premises where now Ruwanweli amaha cheathiya is shining. king Dutugemunu wanted to cut down the tree in order to build up this holy stupa.  Whereas the Diety got a promise from king to name Stupa in rememberance of her name. Accordingly stupa named as Swarnamali Maha Seaya.

As well Ruwanweli Maha Seya belongs to one out of Solosmasthana and Atamastana soon after the war , with king Elara who has Tamil origin king started to build the Maha Stupa, it goes without saying that it was a very hard time for such a miraculous creation under such surrounding. But according to Mahavansa the materials which are essential for the construction of Maha Dagaba sprang up all over the island. People devoted for its construction too.

Stupa has its own structure whih is miraculous. It was well established planfrom its foundation. According to the history books there was an instrument  called as "Wajra Chumbata" very similar  with "Lightning rod" used in modern world.

And supas have their own structure, Ruwanweli seya was strctured as a bubble floating on the water. In sinhala its Bubbulakara in shape.  Around the Dagaba there is a round of sculpted elephants. According to some history books tuskers of those elephants were made of ivory at that time.

Dagaba has 90 diameter at base and 92 metere height.  By 19th century the stupa had fallen in to ruin. Naranwitiye Sumanasara Thero himslf made great effort in order to renovate the heart of all Buddhist.

According to the Mahavansa king Dutugemunu was unable to complete this sacred creation, he watched the incompleted Stupa while in death bed. King's brother Saddathissa was the one who completed this mission. Later on various kings renovated the stupa protecting its initial structure.

According to Buddhist teachings Ruwnweli Maha seya said to be remain 5000 years, in that paricular point all the sacred relics of Lord Buddha will be assembled at the top of Stupa and will preach Dharma Deshana. That will be the end and it is called as "Dathu Parinirvanaya". Teachings of Gauthama Buddha will be disappered accordingly. Therefore Ruwanweli Maha seya is said as the pinnacle of all Buddhists.
