DALADA MALIGAWA

 Dalada Maligawa one of  the most precious and holy icon of all Buddhists  around the world, which is situated in central province with a great architecture. 

According  to ancient sources picturesque "Paththiruppuwa",  was created by well known Dewendra Mulachari who was the best architecture by the time of Kandyan kingdom.  Holy tooth Relic of Lord Buddha who is the leader, philosopher and the greatest preacher of Buddhists' all over the world was safely kept inside the chambers with all fragrant flowers and various offerings. Esala Perahara is held by the countrymen with the fully supervision and state sponsorship in every July.  It is a mirror of the cultural and religious harmony and the uniqueness of all Sri Lankan.  

According to the sources available, Tooth Relic was brought by Prince Dantha and Princess Hemamala, who set foot by the time of king Kithsiri Megha in Anuradhapura era. Since then, protecting Tooth Relic was the prime duty of the kings.  Kings who ruled the country protected holy Tooth Relic as their eyes and The Tooth Relic was at the place where king resided, accordingly kings built many architectural buildings as the shelter of  Tooth Relic. 

During the time of king Darmapala in Kotte era, Tooth Relic was in a grinding stone at Delgamuwa Viharaya. It was very uncertain time with no political stability. This was the era Portuguese was trying to get in to the internal administration of Kotte. The Tooth Relic was safe at Delgamuwa viharaya and carefully brought to Kandy by Devanagala Rathnalankara Thero and Hiripitiya Diyawaana Nilame . The present day Dalada Maliawa was built by the last  Sinhalese king in ancient Ceylon Sri Veera Parakrama Narendra Singha  . And the octagonal shape Paththirippuwa  was added to the Dalada Maligawa in the time of Sri Wickrama Rajasingha the last king in Ceylon. (King with Tamil Hindu origin )   

Sri Dalada Maligawa is world Heritage which is a land mark area legally preserved by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural organization (UNESCO) mainly due to the Temple. Rituals are performed by the specific crew to the holy Tooth Relic, three times daily, at dawn at noon and at evening. Apart from the Temple the while Dalada Maligawa premises is nourished with various archaeological sites, royal palace known as "Mahawasala" today  seen as archaeological museum. "Ulpan Gea" the bathing place of queens' This architectural creation can be seen only in this premises. "Mahamaluwa" was the place ordinary people gathered to see the glorious "Esala Perahara", today the premises bears the statute of Weera Madduma Bandara who scarified his life with brave in this Maligawa premises. And the statute of Princess "Hemamala" and Prince "Dantha" too is sanding there today.  

Ancient paintings inside the chambers f Maligawa  blongs to the Kandyan era, with special artistic features. 

Udawatta kele (woods) the famous sanctuary provides shelter, calmness as well the glory to the Dalada premises.     

Even today Sri Dalada Maligawa is standing on this holy premises  blessing to the whole country.
